Safety & Crisis Resources
If you are in immediate danger, call 911 (or your local emergency number) right now.
Oafer is an AI study companion. It is not a crisis service, a counselor, or a substitute for professional mental-health care, and it cannot keep you safe in an emergency. If you are struggling, please use the resources below — they are free, confidential, and staffed by people who want to help.
Get help now
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — call or text 988 (US), available 24/7. 988lifeline.org
- Crisis Text Line — text HOME to 741741 (US). crisistextline.org
- Emergencies — call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
- Outside the US — find a local helpline at findahelpline.com.
What Oafer does when crisis content comes up
We want to be precise and honest about how the product actually behaves, rather than describe something aspirational:
- Automated detection. When you send a message, Oafer runs a check for clear self-harm or suicidal language. When that check matches, Oafer surfaces the crisis resources above to you directly — in addition to its normal reply, at the top of the response, so the resources are the first thing you see.
- It is always shown, not left to the AI. The crisis resources are inserted by Oafer's own code, not written by the AI model, so they appear reliably and worded correctly rather than depending on what the model happens to generate.
- Oafer does not present itself as a crisis counselor. The inserted message states plainly that Oafer is a study companion, not a crisis or mental-health service, and points you to real help.
The limits of this safeguard
This is a basic automated safeguard, and it is important you know what it is not:
- It looks for clear, common expressions of self-harm and suicidal intent. It will not catch every way someone might express distress — including euphemism, indirect language, or languages other than English.
- It does not contact anyone on your behalf, does not alert emergency services, and is not monitored by a human in real time.
- It is not a diagnosis and not a substitute for talking to a real person or a professional.
If you are worried about yourself or someone else, please reach out to one of the resources above. You deserve support from people who can actually provide it.
A note for younger users
Oafer is intended for users aged 13 and older. Companion-style chatbots may not be suitable for some minors. If you are a young person using Oafer and you are struggling, please talk to a trusted adult and use the crisis resources above.
